JR Flowers is a wedding and event floral design studio serving NOVA, DC and southern Maryland. All of their designs are custom made for their client’s vision.
Meet Shirley. The face behind JR Flowers.
What is the inspiration for your business? How did you get started? Flowers have been a part of my life since childhood. My grandmother and mother both loved flowers and I grew up around them. I didn’t set out to be a wedding florist though. I went to college then medical school. I am a part time pediatrician in Northern Virginia. I would design flowers as a hobby for friends and family whenever they had significant life events. Once my children grew older I started to get the itch to have a design studio of my own. Finally in 2016 that dream became a reality, and I couldn’t be happier.
What is your best advice for a bride-to-be? Get a few ideas of flowers that you like, have a color palate in mind before you contact your florist. Most people aren’t familiar with the cost of wedding flowers, they can be more expensive than you may think. If you love flowers then they are worth the investment. They will be highly photographed on the wedding day so you want them to be simply amazing.
What keeps you motivated to face the challenges small business owners face? I think you have to love what you do if you own a small business. If the passion is there then you are more likely to be motivated to keep pushing through the challenges. I also connect with other small business owners in the same industry and we give each other support.
Excluding yours, what company or business do you admire the most? And why? Designs by Oochay and Intrigue Designs. These women have been phenomenal mentors to me since I started my journey in the wedding florals industry. They have such a passion for wedding flowers and they want to see others succeed in this business. I can’t thank them enough for their kindness, advice and support. What are your hobbies? What do you do in your non-work time? I love to read, work in my garden and travel. I spend most of my downtime with my husband and sons, Justin and Ryan. My sons are the namesake of JR Flowers.
How do you balance your time, personal and professional? Still struggling with that! My business is home based so sometimes I don’t know when to stop, my family can attest to that!
